Community as a competitive advantage

Community is becoming an increasingly important part of how brands build trust, strengthen relationships and get discovered.

Our Head of PR & Social, Chloe Buchanan, recently shared her perspective with Sage on why brands need to think beyond simply reaching audiences and consider the communities where their customers are already spending their time.

She says the most effective partnerships and sponsorships act as evidence of what a brand stands for. Rather than simply saying what matters to them, brands can demonstrate it through the communities, causes and organisations they choose to support.

She also explores the growing role communities play in brand discovery. Conversations on Reddit, Discord, specialist forums, LinkedIn and Facebook groups, podcasts and other interest-led spaces can all shape how a brand is perceived.

But simply showing up isn't enough. Genuine engagement requires brands to contribute meaningfully and build trust, rather than simply using communities as another place to distribute their message.

The wider Sage article, “Community as a competitive advantage”, hears from a number of marketing experts, exploring how businesses can identify the communities that matter to their customers, engage authentically and turn participation into stronger long-term relationships. It also considers the role of digital platforms, AI-powered discovery, sponsorships and local initiatives
