When AI agents start working together

AI agents are beginning to move beyond individual tasks, with teams of specialised agents increasingly able to work together across more complex business processes.

MTM Managing Director, Wes Maynard, recently shared his perspective with Silicon UK for Your First AI Team: When AI Agents Start Working Together, exploring how businesses can embrace the potential of multi-agent AI without losing sight of control, accountability and measurable value.

The article looks at what happens when different AI agents are given specific roles within the same workflow. One might research a problem, another assess the available options, and another prepare the next action, potentially helping businesses move work forward faster and reducing the amount of manual handover between teams.

But adding more agents doesn’t necessarily mean better outcomes. As AI systems become more interconnected, mistakes can also travel between them, making clear roles, reliable handovers and appropriate human oversight increasingly important.

For Wes, the focus should remain firmly on whether each agent has a genuine purpose and contributes to a better business outcome.

‘The test for me is pretty simple: does each agent have a clearly defined job and does it materially improve the outcome? If it doesn’t, remove it.’

The wider Silicon UK article brings together perspectives from technology and AI leaders to explore how organisations can build effective AI agent teams. It considers everything from defining responsibilities and managing handovers to verification, permissions and human oversight, asking how businesses can gain the benefits of greater AI autonomy while keeping decisions understandable and people in control.
